Ms. Dawn H. Delaney

Dawn H. Delaney passed away Monday, March 7, 2022. She was a loving, caring and devoted wife, mother, sister, and friend.

The youngest of three girls, she was born on August 22, 1937, to Mr. Harvey Palmer and Mrs. Vivian Henderson in Kernersville, N.C. But it was Bristol that she called home. Her family relocated to Bristol, Tenn., where Dawn graduated from Slater High School, just up the hill from the family home on McDowell St. She then went on to graduate from Knoxville College, where she was a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

The connection of her lifetime was with Fred Delaney, who graduated from a rival high school – Douglass High – across the state line in Bristol, Va. He also attended Knoxville College and they would go on to marry in 1960. Their marriage would last 54 years – until Fred’s passing in 2014.

In the early ’60s Dawn worked as a social worker in upstate New York, but she chose to join Fred out west in Denver, Colo., where they would ultimately start their family and where Fred began a 30-year career with IBM. His assignments would take the family to New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island, and Georgia.

Her sons, Roger and Trevor, would attest to how dedicated their mother was: starting with educational quizzes during the summer months as young kids (can you name all of the state capitals?), to perfecting her fried chicken for road trips from New Jersey to Bristol, to offering counsel in her senior years about keeping the frustrations of everyday life in perspective – “Don’t work too hard,” she would commonly caution.

While raising her family in Teaneck, N.J., Dawn was an active member of Jack & Jill of America and was a founding member of the local alumni chapter of Delta Sigma Theta. When Roger and Trevor went off to college, Dawn began working part-time as a home healthcare aide. She was known as a kind and nurturing caregiver.

Upon Fred’s retirement, the couple returned to Bristol and were committed citizens of the community. Dawn was particularly active with the John Wesley United Methodist Church, where her grandfather, Harvey, was one of the founders.

Dawn is survived her sons, Roger Delaney of Atlanta and Trevor Delaney of West Orange, N.J. She is also survived by sister, Joan Jackson; devoted friend, Ray Neal; nephew, Eric Jackson; and a host of relatives and many friends. Dawn was preceded in death by sister Katie Rhoda Henderson.

Funeral services for Ms. Dawn Delaney will be conducted Saturday, March 12, 2022 at 2 pm from John Wesley United Methodist Church, 311 Lee Street, Bristol, Virginia. The family will receive friends from 1 pm until the hour of service. Pastor Robert Kariuki officiating. Entombment will follow at Mt. View Cemetery Mausoleum Bristol, Va.
