Mrs. Mary Evelyn Johnson
Mrs. Mary Evelyn Hill Johnson was born September 1, 1937, to Robert and Carrie Hill. She departed this life on Friday, February 28, 2020, at Ballad Johnston Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.
Mary was one of 11 children and the twin of Nancy. She graduated from Douglass High School in 1956 and married the love of her life Billy Mack Johnson August 31, 1957. Mary worked hard to provide for her family and was known for opening her home to style hair.
Mary was a faithful member of Mt. Calvary Community Church in Glade Spring Virginia. Over the years she served as a Sunday school teacher and superintendent, usher, the missionary secretary, the choir president, and worked to maintain the cleanliness of the church. She was still active as the Pastor’s Aid president, a piano player, and a member of the praise team.
Mary had a great love for cooking and taking care of people. She could often be found in the kitchen before and after special events preparing meals. There was no such thing as just enough, there always had to be excess with Mary. She always wanted to ensure everyone could eat plenty and take some home as well. She never arrived anywhere or allowed others to walk through her door without feeding them something.
Mary was always there with an encouraging word and a warm hug. Many valued her as a maternal figure and she happily treated them as her own. All gloves were off though when she was playing Uno, Scrabble, or her favorite “Boggles”. She never allowed age to slow her down and could still whoop some tail when she wanted.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Mack Johnson; her parents, Mr. Robert Hill, Sr. and Mrs. Carrie Lena Hoard Hill; four brothers, Merriell Hill, Arthur Hill, Robert Hill, Jr., and Douglas Hill; and two sisters, Mrs. Joann Ellison, and Mrs. Nell Wooten.
She is survived by one son, Melvin (Dianna) Johnson; two daughters, Mrs. Linda (Ronnie) Montgomery and Mrs. Carrie (Mitchell) Clark; eight grandchildren, Ms. Bethané Johnson, Mr. Marcus (Jenna) Montgomery, Ms. Amber Johnson, Mr. Mitchell Clark, II, Ms. Cara Clark, Mr. Xavier Johnson, Mr. Emilio Montgomery, and Mr. Jose Montgomery; one great-grandchild, Ms. Cleo Johnson; one brother, Mr. Eugene (Millicent) Hill; three sisters, Mrs. Nancy (Nathanial) Johnson, Mrs. Betty (Clyde, Sr, deceased) Cook, and Mrs. Constance (William) Washington; three sisters-in-law, Mrs. Mary Nowlin, Mrs. Elizabeth Hill, and Mrs. Alfreda Johnson; three brothers-in-law, Mr. Ezekiel Johnson, Bishop James (Mattie) Johnson, and Mr. Charles Ellison; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
