Ms. Carolyn Virginia Worley transitioned from Ballad Bristol Regional Hospital and Medical Center into the presence of the Lord on Saturday, November 3, 2018, at 3:14 a.m. after a lengthy illness.
Carolyn V. Worley was born July 11, 1940, in Bristol, Virginia to the late Virginia Worley and Wilbur Thompson. She was born third of nine children. Carolyn matriculated through the public school system in Tennessee graduating from Slater High School in 1959. After graduation, she attended college in South Carolina where she met and married Cleo Morrison. To this marriage, three children were born.
In 1965, Carolyn moved with her three children to Kingsport, TN and there she met and married James Thompson, Sr. and to this marriage, two children were born. While in Kingsport, Carolyn served in the home and in her church, Central Baptist Church. She also was a member of the singing group, The Heavenly Echoes. Singing was one of Carolyn’s passions along with playing the piano.
In 1971, the family moved to Detroit, MI where Carolyn obtained a position with the State of Michigan as Supervisor of Logistics for the Detroit Public School System. She was employed with the Detroit Public School System until her retirement in 1995. In addition to her natural job, Carolyn also served as the First Lady of Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Romulus, MI for 12 years. Carolyn was a good listener and the council she gave to her church family was filled with godly wisdom. While in Michigan, Carolyn was also an avid bowler with her league and carried a 200+ bowling average. Affectionately known as “CT,” she won several bowling tournaments over the course of many years.
In 1996, after her retirement, Carolyn moved to Bennettsville, SC where she enjoyed retirement as a gardener and was a friend to many. As issues with her health began to surface, she chose to move back to her hometown of Bristol, Virginia where she joined New Hope Baptist Church and was active in the music ministry. Later she moved to Kingsport, TN where she became a member of Powerful New Life Church of God in Christ and served faithfully until her death.
In God’s appointed time, Carolyn’s son Dennis and seven of her siblings, Floyd Worley, Rowena (Richard) Clark, Lorraine Perry, Robert Worley, David Worley, Danny Worley, and Augusta Coclough-Forest have all preceded her in death.
Left to cherish her memory are her four children: Mr. Dwayne Morrison, Kingsport, TN; Ms. Denise Morrison, Kingsport, TN; Mrs. Aronda (Bob) Hill, Durham, NC; and Mr. James (Kotinna) Thompson, Jr., Kingsport, TN; daughter-in-law, Mrs. Ingerbord Morrison, Detroit, MI; brother, Mr. Wilbur (Ruby) Worley, Johnson City, TN; sister-in-law, Ms. Pat Worley, Haw River, NC; brother-in-law, Mr. James Perry, Detroit, MI; former spouses, Rev. James Thompson, Sr. of Detroit, MI and Mr. Cleo Morrison, Bennettsville, SC; 12 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews and special family and friends.
Services for Ms. Worley will be conducted Wednesday, November 7, 2018 at 1:00 pm from Central Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from noon until the time of service.
