Susie Lee Harris, 91, passed away on September 17, 2017 at The Cambridge House in Bristol, TN. Born in Abingdon, VA to the late Oscar and Lavenia Brown, Susie was one of nine children with three brothers and five sisters.
She graduated from Morristown College in TN where she majored in Education. It was also at Morristown where she would meet the love of her life, Grayson Marshall Harris Jr. The newlyweds moved to Bristol shortly thereafter where Susie worked as a 1st grade teacher. After the birth of her first child, Brenda Sue, Susie focused on being a homemaker and steward to the community. Nearly ten years later, Susie would give birth to her son, Grayson Marshall Harris III.
She was a proud and loyal member of John Wesley United Methodist Church in Bristol, TN for well over 60 years and served in numerous clubs, associations, choirs, and teaching roles. Her life changed forever in 1974 when her husband died suddenly. Susie, still grieving, resolved to do what it took to care for her now fatherless children. She soon began working at Thrifty Market, where she served as their first black cashier. Her presence and smile gave many locals the dignity they had so long been denied. From there Susie moved on to work at both Raytheon and Parks Belk. Wherever she served, people appreciated her sweetness and generosity.
After her working days, Susie continued serving her church, community, and family in any way she could. She wrote letters to encourage, baked bread to nourish, and gave hugs of comfort with no expectations of return. To Susie, the giving was her gift.
Sussie is preceded in death by her husband Grayson; son, Marshall; daughter, Brenda; sisters, Della, Jean, Frances, and Ruth; and brothers, Doug, Ned, and Snookie. She is survived by her sister, Barbara B. Hall of Columbus, OH; grandchildren, John Byron Brooks and Ahkeeia Sherri Cisneros of Bristol; great grandchildren, Marcele, Douglas, and Kayla; and numerous nephews, nieces, godchildren, friends, and associates.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00pm Saturday, September 23, 2017 from John Westley United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends from 2:00pm until the hour of service. Interment will follow at Mt. View Cemetery.
