Rev. Anthony (Tony) L. Horton, Sr.

Rev. Anthony “Tony” Horton, Sr, 65, of Kingsport, TN, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday December 24, 2016 at Wellmont Medical Center.

He was born February 28, 1951, in Stonega, VA, to Pinkie and Ray Horton, the 6th of nine children. He graduated from at Dobyns-Bennett High School where he was an outstanding offensive and defensive football player.

He received a vocational certification in carpentry from Dayton Vocational educational system. He had great entrepreneurial spirit and started several businesses including a cleaning service, a shoe shine service, and an airport luggage delivery service.

Rev. Horton started his ministry with Mount Zion Holiness Church under the late James Turner Sr and Mother Lilly Turner. He later became active in the AME Zion denomination where ministered to numerous churches in Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia for over 40 years.

Tony was well thought of and loved by all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his father, Ray Horton, Sr, and brothers, Calvin Horton and Ray “Bug” Horton, Jr.

He is survived by his mother, Pinkie Horton of Burlington, NC; wife Vera Horton of Kpt, TN; children Tonya Horton of Nashville, TN, Jacquetta Steel of Cleveland, OH, Anthony “TJ” Horton, Jr of Rogersville, TN, Toya Little of Columbus, OH, Amanda Horton of Burlington, NC, Abril Dixon and JaVonte Horton of Kpt, TN; His grandchildren Brandon Little, Myisha Roberson (Cedric), Lawrence Turner, V, Jasmin Marcum, Faith Smith, Jared Steel, Olivia Horton, Avery Horton, and Onalycia Woodson; and great grandchildren Neveah and Aliyuanna Little; sisters, Sinora Lewis of Kpt, TN, Helen Styles (Richard) of Burlington, NC, Lillian Tyner of Dayton, OH , Bernice Horton (Ray “Bug” Horton) of Kpt, TN, and adopted sister, Diane Lewis of Roanoke, VA. brothers, Jimmy Horton (Marge) of Anderson, SC, Walter Horton (Debbie) of Fayetteville, NC, Howard Horton (LaKeisha) of Bullock, NC; Aunt, Virginia Finch of Detroit, MI; Uncle, Willie Horton (Gloria) of Southfield, MI; and a host of nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Thursday (12/29/16) from 11:00a – noon at Central Baptist Church in Kpt TN. Celebration of Life Service will be held at noon with Rev Billy Pearson officiating.
