Mr. William D. Hale

William D. Hale, 58, passed away December 9th in Abingdon, VA at his assisted living residence after a lengthy illness. Though he rallied back several times in the recent weeks, a complete healing was not meant to be.

William was born in Dante, VA and then moved to Kingsport, TN with his family. There he finished his secondary education, graduating from Dobyns-Bennett High School in 1977. After high school, he worked at Eastman and joined the army for a short stint. He moved to Virginia in the early eighties and remained there until his death.

William was a hard worker and loved people. He had an infectious “grin” and a laugh that was unique to him. He loved to jog and walk. He would be seen daily jogging around Abingdon until he developed asthma and had to resort to walking. He would walk miles at a time, in any weather. Even a few weeks before his death, he could walk a few miles and help mop the floors of the assisted living center where he resided.

One thing that he also loved was “words”. He was never seen without his dictionary and he would always want to share the definition of new words with anyone he met. In fact, he would greet you with “do you know what this word means”? He was an avid reader and would read several books at one time. William was loved by many and will be missed by more.

He is preceded in death by his parents, James Hale and Violet Davis.

He leaves to mourn his passing his nine siblings; Dianne, James, Ralph, Sharon, Deborah, Caron, Vickie (Theodore), Robert (Sharon), Terry and a niece Timula, that was like a sister; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

William’s family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Renaissance House for the care and compassion that was given to him.

A graveside service for Mr. William D. Hale will be conducted Wednesday December 14, 2016 at 2:30pm from the VA National Cemetery.
