Deacon Richard A. Clark, Sr., 82, departed this life Sunday, October 2, 2016, at his home.
Richard was born in Saltville, Virginia, but traveled around the world during his time in the military before making a home here in Bristol, Virginia.
Richard said since high school that it was his dream to be a funeral director. After high school, he joined the Air Force, and attended a technical school in Wyoming. Richard was stationed in Japan for three years, where he was able to serve our country and attend management school. Upon returning home Richard began working in the funeral industry with Mr. P.H. Robinson.
Richard always said he wanted to be more than just a funeral director; he wanted to be a funeral director who was dedicated and very professional when dealing with families. He said it takes a special person to help and care for people when they are at one of their lowest points; he believed he had the compassion and understanding needed for the job.
Richard worked passionately in the funeral business for over 60 years. His love for people and serving the community allowed him to work without tiring.
Richard was preceded in death by his wife Mrs. Rowena W. Clark; his eldest son Richard A. Clark, Jr.; his father, Mitchell Clark; mother, Mrs. Nora H. Clark; and one sister, Mrs. Blanche Wilson.
Survivors include: His two sons, Mitchell (Carrie) Clark, and Travis (Melonye) Clark, and daughter-in-law Mrs. Vanessa Clark; seven grandchildren, Kylie, Mitchell II, Travis II, Cara, Madison, Jacey, and Taylen; one brother, Mitchell O. Clark; three sisters, Mrs. Barbara Odom, Mrs. Julia Lee, and Mrs. Joyce Songui; as well as a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.
Funeral Services for Richard will be held at Lee Street Baptist Church on Thursday, October 6, 2016, at 7:00pm. The family will receive friends at 6:00pm until the hour of service. Interment will be held at Mt View Cemetery on Friday, October 7, 2016, the cortege will depart from Lee Street at 9:45am.
