Mrs. Blanche Opal Smith passed away on Monday, June 8, 2015 at the Salem Health and Rehabilitation Center in Salem, Virginia. She was born on October 15, 1939 in Glade Spring, Virginia. She attended Douglass High School, graduating in 1957. She continued her education at the Cornet School of Business in Roanoke, Virginia, Virginia State University in Petersburg, Virginia, and Virginia Union University in Richmond, Virginia.
She taught in the Tabernacle School District in Tabernacle, New Jersey, and as a substitute teacher in Zion, Illinois. Being fond of the written word, she penned numerous poems and songs throughout her life. As the dedicated spouse of a U.S. Army officer, she raised a family while continuously moving and living all around the world, including throughout the United States and in The Netherlands.
Blanche was preceded in death by her parents, Jay and Sallie Lou (Stuart) McNichols, brother Jay T. McNichols, sister Marjorie Coleman, and son Gardner Rayford Smith.
She is survived by her son Charles J. Smith, III, daughter Thaiese Smith, grandson Dominique Alexander Smith Harris, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 12 to 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 13, 2015 at Fairview Baptist Church located at 532 Azalea Drive; Glade Spring, Virginia followed immediately by the funeral service starting at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Danny Belcher officiating. Interment will be at Mount Rose Cemetery.
